Bioheat® Fuel: A Clean Burning Alternative to Traditional Home Heating Oil

bioheat.pngThe heating oil industry has answered the call for clean-burning, alternative fuels with Bioheat Fuel - a blend of low-sulfur heating oil and biodiesel that significantly lowers a homeowner's carbon footprint by reducing the amount of greenhouse gases produced by oil-fired home heating equipment.

A majority of our participating dealers deliver Bioheat Fuel because...

  • The biodiesel component is made from renewable resources such as soybean oil, peanut oil, animal fats and other byproducts of local agriculture.
  • It produces the same satisfying heat as traditional heating oil, but with fewer harmful emissions
  • From production to delivery, it supports more than 30,000 jobs and has contributed billions of dollars to the U.S. economy.
  • The heating oil industry has resolved to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 15% by 2023; 40% by 2030; and net-zero by 2050. Bioheat Fuel is leading the charge to a cleaner future!

Learn More About Bioheat Fuel With These Frequently Asked Questions:

What is biodiesel made of?

Biodiesel is made from a variety of natural, renewable materials including raw vegetable oils, used cooking oils, yellow grease and animal fats.

How much biodiesel is actually in Bioheat Fuel?

The amount of biodiesel blended into Bioheat Fuel varies from dealer to dealer. B5 Bioheat Fuel, as an example, contains 5% biodiesel and 95% low-sulfur heating oil. Modern home heating equipment has been rated for blends as high as 20% biodiesel, also known as B20 Bioheat Fuel.

Do I have to make any changes to my heating system to use Bioheat Fuel?

Not at all! Bioheat Fuel can be used in all oil-fired heating equipment, and oil storage tanks do not need to be emptied or cleaned out for Bioheat Fuel to be delivered.

Does Bioheat Fuel cost more than traditional heating oil?

The price of Bioheat Fuel tracks very closely to the price of traditional heating oil, the difference typically only being fractions of a penny per gallon. However, Bioheat Fuel is more cost-effective in the long run, because its cleaner burn means a cleaner, longer-lasting system with fewer needed repairs.

How does Bioheat Fuel reduce my carbon footprint?

As mentioned, Bioheat Fuel burns cleaner than traditional heating oil because it contains renewable biodiesel. This reduces greenhouse gas emissions of Sulfur, Nitrogen Oxides and Carbon Dioxide.

In essence, Bioheat Fuel is the answer to the question, "What can the heating oil industry do to promote a green future?"
